The collection consists of letters written by Edward James to his wife Elizabeth Harrell James in Fitzgerald, Georgia, before and after they were married. He gives descriptive details of the Okinawan people, houses, crops, and typhoons. The letters to his wife are both romantic and sexually explicit. During World War II many of his letters discuss his future plans of owning a farm.
